HUD Announces $754,859 Recovery Act Green Retrofit Award to Cathedral Square

The U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Regional Administrator Richard A. Walega announced in Boston on August 19, 2010 that Cathedral Square Senior Living in Burlington, VT has been awarded $754,859 to complete energy efficient renovations with Recovery Act funds. These renovations will not only generate many necessary upgrades to 107 affordable apartments, but they will also create jobs and save money for residents.

The award is part of HUD’s Green Retrofit Program for Multifamily Housing, created for the first time through the Recovery Act. The Green Retrofit Program is providing $250 million nationally to reduce energy costs, cut water consumption, and improve indoor air quality.

“This funding is improving the quality of life for Cathedral Square residents, in addition to lowering energy costs and creating quality green jobs.” said HUD New England Regional Administrator Richard A. Walega.

The Green Retrofit Program will help Cathedral Square cut heating and air conditioning costs by installing more efficient heating and cooling systems, and to reduce water use by replacing faucets and toilets. These Recovery Act funds also produce other environmental benefits by encouraging the use of recycled building materials, reflective roofing, and non-toxic products to reduce potentially harmful ‘off-gassing’ of harmful fumes.

Every dollar of Recovery Act funds HUD spends can be reviewed and tracked at HUD’s Recovery Act website.  The full text of HUD’s funding notices and tracking of future performance of these grants is also available at HUD’s Recovery Act website.

Meet Kitty DiNicola

Kitty lives in Jericho, Vermont at Jeri-Hill, a Cathedral Square community for seniors who are age 62 or older or disabled.  Kitty has been a resident of Jeri-Hill for 11 years and really loves it.  Prior to living in Vermont, she lived in Maine, Arizona, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and a number of other states.

Kitty graduated from high school then worked in a variety of different industries.  She did office work for her husband’s business, worked in manufacturing and also worked in a restaurant. She raised two children and now has two grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

One of her favorite memories was a 14-day European trip that she was able to take in 1988 to Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Austria with a friend.  She has also traveled extensively across the United States.

Kitty has a number of hobbies she loves including; painting, quilting, arts and crafts, reading, and cooking.  Kitty is currently an active member of the Essex Art League.  She paints in watercolor and oils and has paintings displaying at the Red Mill in Jericho and the Phoenix Book Store in Essex Junction.  Her favorite subjects to paint are landscapes, still life’s and boats.  Kitty says, “When I am working on a painting, I can just get lost in it.  Most of my life I have painted on location and I know the Maine coast so well.”  She has participated in art classes, workshops and painting tours mostly when she lived in New Hampshire.  Then after moving to Maine, she went to Monhegan Island, Maine to paint for one week every summer.  “I love to paint on location, and then have a tailgate lunch with friends.  There is nothing better than painting in the morning, then taking a break for lunch with a liverwurst, onion and mustard sandwich with friends.  When I was younger, I would rent a cottage for a week with three of my artist friends and we would paint at different places along the coast of Maine, then go out for dinner at night.”

When speaking of her home at Jeri-Hill, she says, “People don’t realize how lucky they are.  I love the window in my kitchen and I especially like the private entrance and deck.  I am allergic to animals, so it is perfect for me.  The residents are all very nice, as well as the Cathedral Square staff.”

While she still misses Maine, she is glad to be living in Vermont near one of her granddaughters,   enjoying the peace and tranquility of country living in Jericho.  In the photo of Kitty, you will notice one of her beautiful watercolor paintings of the Red Mill in Jericho, Vermont.
